The tamper is your key to a balanced, full-bodied espresso. With the right pressure and the correct size, it compresses the coffee grounds evenly—ensuring optimal extraction and the perfect shot.
Finding the Right Tamper Size
The tamper size is crucial for evenly compressing the coffee grounds and achieving the perfect espresso extraction. To ensure your espresso is full-bodied and aromatic, the tamper should fit perfectly into your portafilter.
If your espresso machine manufacturer does not specify a tamper size, you can easily determine it yourself:
Simply measure the inner diameter of your portafilter and subtract 1 mm from the measured value—this will give you the correct tamper size. A tamper that is too small compresses the coffee unevenly, while one that is too large may not fit properly or could damage the portafilter.
To be absolutely certain, you can also use our tamper templates for printing and cutting out. Place the selected template into your portafilter to quickly and accurately determine the correct diameter for your new tamper.
⚠️ Important: When printing, make sure the “Fit to page” option is disabled; otherwise, the dimensions will be distorted.
Our tampers and tamper templates are available in various sizes between 48 mm and 58 mm. The templates are provided as a free PDF download, making it easy to determine your ideal tamper size precisely.
